This list of My Favorite Scary Books is perfect for Halloween — a whole list of scares to keep you up at night!
When written well, books can be so much scarier than movies. And a really scary book can grab me and keep me up all night reading. So worth the sleep deprivation!!
If you’re an avid reader or a fan of scary stories, I put together a list of my favorite scary books! These are perfect for this month when we are all about all things spooky.
1. The Exorcist: Need I say more? Scarred for life.
2. The Shining: The book is SO much scarier than the movie, and that’s saying a LOT.
3. The Passage: The first in a trilogy, this dystopian vampire thriller is hard to put down.
4. Carrie: I think we all know how this story ends, but the build up is just as creepy. Stephen King is the master of scary stories!
5. House of Leaves: Described as The Blair Witch Project in book form, this story had a HUGE internet following before it became available in book form. It’s a long and very unusual book, but the creep factor is major and it’s full of surprises.
6. The Amityville Horror: This terrifying book tells the story of a house possessed by evil spirits. Basically my worst nightmare.
7. ROOM: Not creepy in the traditional scary sense, but this book about a woman who was kidnapped and forced to live in a storage shed will scare you in it’s own way.
8. Misery: This book about a deranged fan holding her favorite author captive is one of my all-time favorites of Stephen King.
9. Red Dragon: This Silence of the Lambs prequel is one of the scariest books I’ve ever read. So much creepier than the movie!
10. The Historian: This is part historical fiction, part thriller and part vampire novel. At times you find yourself forgetting that it’s a fictional story.
11. The Graveyard Book: This YA novel is sad and beautiful and just a bit spooky.
12. The Witches: When I was about 11 years old, this was the scariest book I’d ever read! I still love it — the movie is pretty great, too.
13. Mystic River: An amazing, gripping piece of literature. You won’t forget this book!
14. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Give this book a few chapters – it will grab you a bit of the ways in and won’t let go! I didn’t love the two sequels, but I LOVED this one!
15. Gone Girl: SO many twists and turns. This is a must read!
I’m always looking for new books, so I’d love to hear if I left any of your favorite scary stories off the list!
